Why pixels matter more than the DPI label
A 6000 × 4000 pixel image contains the same number of pixels whether its metadata says 72 DPI or 300 DPI. Without resampling, changing that label only changes the proposed physical size and pixel density—it does not create more detail.
PPI describes image pixels per printed inch. DPI describes a printer's output dots. They are related in a print workflow but are not interchangeable measurements.
How to account for cropping
Aspect ratio decides whether the entire photo fits. A 6000 × 4000 photo is 3:2, so it fits 4×6, 8×12, 12×18, 20×30 and 24×36 without an aspect-ratio crop. An 8×10 or 16×20 is 4:5, so the long edge must be shortened.
3:2 to 4:5 example: a landscape 6000 × 4000 photo becomes 5000 × 4000 after a centered crop. That removes 1000 pixels in total—about 16.7% of the original width.
Cropping only needs to remove material from one direction. If the photo is wider than the print, crop left and right; if it is taller, crop top and bottom. The important question is whether that cut affects the subject.

300+ PPI
Excellent for albums, desk prints and details examined close up.
180–299 PPI
A useful range for most photo prints and normal wall viewing.
120–179 PPI
Best reserved for larger display prints seen from farther away.
These are decision ranges, not guarantees. A sharp, low-noise original can tolerate enlargement better than a blurred or heavily compressed file. Small text and fine graphic detail also demand more resolution than a soft photographic scene.

Divide the pixel width and height by 300. A 6000 × 4000 pixel photo can print at 20 × 13.3 inches at 300 PPI before cropping.
Is 150 PPI enough for a large photo print?
It can be enough for a clean wall print viewed from farther away. For close viewing, fine text or highly detailed work, aim closer to 240–300 PPI.
Why does an 8×10 crop my camera photo?
Most interchangeable-lens cameras create 3:2 photos, while an 8×10 print is 4:5. Fitting 3:2 into 4:5 removes about 16.7% of the long dimension.
Does the DPI number stored in my file limit print size?
